Steelpan / steel drum multi-mic phase: close pans vs OH, room, and ensemble fold

Close mics on steelpans feel rich in the booth and on stage monitors. On carnival livestream, studio mono fold, or club PA, body and shimmer often thin or cancel against OH, room, and ensemble mics that carry the same pan a few milliseconds later. That is usually polarity and arrival time between closes and OH/room paths, plus a stereo pan bed that was never folded before send. Fix polarity and small delays first. Frequency-aware phase repair belongs only after residual L/R fights remain on stereo pan beds before mono fold.

PHIXER is free stereo phase-repair (VST3/CLAP/AU · Win/Mac/Linux) from Riverflux Audio. Frequency-aware phase rotation for leftover L/R fights on stereo material. It is not a steelpan compressor, not a widener, and not a substitute for mic placement or mono audition of the stream or PA bus. Polarity and timing first; PHIXER after residual spectral fights.

What steelpan / steel drum phase failure sounds like

Fast mono audition (about 60 seconds)

  1. Solo the stream / PA / mix bus (not only booth headphones). Flip a utility to mono.
  2. A/B close pans muted vs open under OH/room/ensemble. Note what disappears: body, low notes, shimmer, attack.
  3. Solo pairs: closes vs OH, section pans vs room, stereo pan bed vs mono fold.
  4. Check correlation on the delivery bus, then with pans muted vs full.

Order of operations (before spectral phase rotation)

1. Polarity between close pans and OH / room / ensemble

Flip closes vs OH, or section pans vs room, when body or low notes return immediately. Guide: polarity vs phase. Related: hand drums, toms.

2. Small delay align closes to the OH / room image

Close pans often arrive earlier than OH or room. A few samples of delay on closes (or nudge to the hero OH image) often restores body better than any widener.

3. One hero pan image to the stream or PA bus

Do not send every close, OH, and ensemble path all hot into the livestream or PA. Pick a hero image (often balanced stereo OH or a focused pan bed), keep extras muted or low. Parallel stacks are classic hollow-body on phone fold. Related: overhead & room.

4. Prefer hero OH/room as the body; quieter color closes

Closes should color attack and note detail, not replace the hero image for the stream mix. If every close sits at full level under loud OH, mono fold almost always hollows body. Pull closes first.

5. Skip wideners and Haas on pan beds before fold

Short-delay width and stereo imagers make booth headphones huge and phones hollow. Keep critical low end and body centered for stream and PA.

6. Only then audition residual L/R spectral fights

If a stereo pan bed must stay stereo and fold still hollows a band after the steps above, gentle frequency-aware phase rotation can help. Prove it with mono A/B, rotator bypassed vs engaged.

Carnival / studio / livestream checklist (to send)

1. Label close vs OH vs room vs ensemble paths

Name closes, section pans, OH, room, and ensemble so operators know what hits the livestream or PA. Ambiguous stacks get left open and comb on fold.

2. Mono-check delivery bus alone, then with full pans

Solo body and low notes in mono. Then open shimmer and attack in mono. Note fights between close color and hero body.

3. Watch phone, social, and PA destinations

Most remote viewers and many dancers hear mono or near-mono. Guides: live FOH, club / PA.

4. Optional null / mono workflow before show

Host-agnostic habit before you go live or print: master bus mono checklist.

When NOT to use PHIXER here

Quick path: Solo delivery bus in mono → polarity closes vs OH/room/ensemble → delay-align closes → one hero pan image → quieter closes under hero → skip Haas/imagers → mono-check with full pans → PHIXER only for leftover stereo cancellation on a pan bed → fold again for stream / PA / carnival send.
